1 medium onion, sliced

1 green bell pepper, sliced (optional, some people skip for “classic Philly”)

1–2 tbsp vegetable oil or butter

4 slices provolone cheese (or American/cheese whiz, depending on preference)

2 hoagie rolls (soft sub rolls)

Salt and black pepper to taste

Instructions:

1. Prepare rolls: Slice hoagie rolls lengthwise and lightly toast if desired.

2. Cook vegetables: Heat 1 tbsp oil in a skillet. Add onions (and bell peppers if using). SautΓ© until soft and golden. Remove and set aside.

3. Cook steak: Add another tbsp of oil/butter. Place thin steak slices on skillet, season with salt + pepper, and cook quickly (2–3 minutes) until just browned.

4. Combine: Mix cooked onions/peppers with steak in the skillet.

5. Melt cheese: Place cheese slices on top of the steak mixture in the pan. Cover for 30–60 seconds until melted.

6. Assemble sandwich: Scoop steak, veggies, and melted cheese mixture into hoagie rolls. Serve hot.

Tip (USA/Canada style):

In Philadelphia, the 3 most common cheese options are Provolone, American Cheese, or Cheese Whiz.

Sandwich is usually served with fries or chips on the side.
